Industry Info - Innovation
British Columbia is a world leader in advanced wood technologies and design and is revolutionizing with new, engineered wood products that allow engineers to span further and build taller using wood.
Through the Wood First Initiative, BC is building a wood culture, where the world sees us as leaders in building with wood, where we produce competitive products and building systems and where we embrace wood as our first choice and best value building material.
Wood has many attributes that make it an obvious choice for green building. It grows naturally, using energy from the sun, and is the only major building material that’s renewable, re-usable and sustainable. When considered over its life cycle, wood outperforms both steel and concrete in terms of embodied energy, air and water pollution, and other environmental impacts.

The New Bioeconomy
British Columbia is the largest producer of bioenergy in North America. The BC Interior forest industry has been a leader in the bioeconomy for over three decades, and is in fact already the largest producer of energy from biomass in the province.
In addition to sawlogs, pulp, paper and residual fibre for energy, the industry is already moving into developing whole new product categories that will drive the new forest bioeconomy for decades to come.
There is a wealth of opportunity to convert forest fibre byproducts into new and innovative bioproducts. Essentially, it is possible to produce from wood fibre just about anything you can produce from fossil fuel – the difference is that wood is a renewable resource.
To foster the advancement of the bioeconomy, the Forest Products Association of Canada has convened the Bio Pathways Network.
