Mandate
The mandate in the area of Aboriginal Affairs is to ensure that COFI members' access to timber is not unduly constrained by government policy, litigation, interim measures or treaties aimed at addressing aboriginal issues.
Major Functions and Responsibilities
- Regularly identify aboriginal issues of a provincial nature.
- Serve as the primary forest industry contact point for BC interior wide aboriginal issues.
- Meet with elected officials and senior government staff to discuss aboriginal issues and promote cooperation.
- Monitor information from, and offer direction to, BC forest industry members participating in regional and provincial advisory processes dealing with treaty and pre-treaty negotiations and related aboriginal issues, including the Treaty Negotiation Advisory Committee (TNAC) and Regional Advisory Committees (RACs).
- Aggressively seek and foster positive relationships with aboriginal leaders, communities and individuals.
- Monitor litigation dealing with aboriginal rights and claims and retain legal counsel as deemed necessary to represent members' interests.
- Monitor, gather and disseminate information to increase awareness, knowledge and understanding of aboriginal issues among members.
