Occupational Health & Safety
Mandate
Promote changes to provincial legislation, regulation and policy related to occupational health and safety issues and Worksafe BC in order to enhance or maintain worker safety and member company competitiveness.
Major Functions and Responsibilities
- Support safety in the forest sector through active participation in BC Forest Safety Council Board of Directors, Committees and program and policy development.
- Identify and prioritize OHS issues of significance to COFI members, advise members of their implications, and develop strategies to address them.
- Ensure that new OHS legislation, regulations, standards or organizations promote worker safety, are based on sound principles, are technically achievable, and have been given the benefit of cost benefit analysis.
- Ensure that the Worksafe BC operates in business-like and cost effective manner.
- Participate in and represent COFI members at public reviews of the Occupational Health & Safety Regulation.

Current Priority Issues
- BC Forest Safety Council development and implementation of programs including Forestry TruckSafe, SAFE Companies, Faller Certification, Forestry Ombudsman and Safety Advocates.
- Improving WSBC operation and administration through participation in the Employers' Forum to the WCB.
- Ongoing review of the Occupational Health & Safety Regulation as it relates to the forest industry.
